Our coach illustrated the importance of commitment with the story Hernan Cortes. It is a story I have heard often, but it never gets old. Legend has it that when Cortes landed his invading forces on the Mexican coast in 1519 he ordered his troops to burn their boats. This prevented retreat and gave his men two choices, succeed with the invasion or die. Retreat or quitting is easy when you have the option. In the face of fear he acted decisively and was victorious. His actions assured his men's commitment to the goal of invading Mexico. How often do we let our fears get in the way of taking decisive action? What could you accomplish if you made a commitment where failure wasn't an option?
We sometimes joke that we have no choice but to build a great real estate practice because we certainly couldn’t get a job!
